Question De Temps
2022
This individual project was carried out in a school context over a semester. The only constraint of the brief was to create a documentary about time. I spent a lot of time thinking about a solid concept. One day, in the local grocery store, I ran into Vincent Grolimund, an independent watchmaker passionate about his craft. While discussing our professional lives, I realized that the link between watchmaking and the theme of time was obvious. I then proposed to Vincent to collaborate on the project.
To prepare, I did a location scout and prepared a series of questions that would help me guide the interview. Since Vincent works from home as an independent, the scout was my first step into his professional world.
My goal and motivation were to show that time is a very abstract concept, and even a watchmaker could not define it precisely.
Given the subject matter and the objects filmed, the idea of using a macro lens was obvious. It was my first time using this type of lens, and the shoot turned into an exciting videographic experience. I really enjoyed using this lens.
The main difficulty of this project was guiding Vincent through his chaotic speech, overflowing with knowledge and passion. Since this was my first experience of this kind, it wasn’t easy. However, thanks to the editing, I managed to restructure his speech by cutting long passages and rearranging his ideas to achieve a conclusive and structured result.
